Abstract: Abstract:Scholars point out a tension between racial justice and disability rights activism. Although racial minorities are more likely to become disabled than whites, both disability activism and the historiography of disability politics tend to focus on the experience and achievements of whites. “…On the other hand, although the state as a political structure is a phenomenon that has always existed, its constituent elements have undergone radical transformations over time. “…Parents often form the backbone of PAGs, as both volunteers and staff, and their experiences enrich the ability of PAGs to connect with future parents. However, research has shown that volunteer activities are more achievable for individuals who are older and/or more affluent (Nesbit et al 2018;Americorps, Office of Research and Evaluation 2021), and white families-especially white mothers-have historically comprised the majority of PAG staff and membership (Erkulwater 2018;Reed and Meredith 2020). Parents with the ability to devote time to nonprofit work are less likely to be from socially disadvantaged groups, and people from minorities and underserved communities may be less inclined to join groups in which they do not see their identities and experiences represented.…”

“…57 The use of racially coded language regarding welfare benefits to argue for the ADA created tensions with Black civil rights activists. 58 Proponents of the legislation also directly questioned the claims of business interests regarding costs. Greyhound buses claimed that installing a wheelchair lift on a bus would cost $35,000 per bus and forcing them to be installed would reduce services to thousands of small towns.…”
