“…Suicide is the leading cause of legal action against mental health professionals across disciplines (Simpson & Stacy 2004). Given the inadequacy of training, the life and death stakes involved, and the everpresent threat of litigation, it is not surprising that working with a suicidal client is among the most difficult and anxiety-provoking aspects of a clinician's work (Hendin, Haas, Maltsberger, Szanto, & Rabinowicz, 2004;Levin, 2005;Pilkinton & Etkin, 2003;Ruskin, Sakinofsky, Bagby, Dickens, & Sousa, 2004;Veilleux, 2011;Wurst et al, 2013;Wurst et al, 2010) and that many clinicians therefore choose not to treat individuals who are suicidal (Langreth & Ruiz, 2010). Thus, suicide prevention efforts must focus also on increasing clinicians' willingness to work with individuals who are suicidal by reducing their fear (and actual risk) of litigation.…”
