How to Acquire Cardiac Volumes for Sonographic Examination of the Fetal Heart

Abstract: Four-dimensional sonography with spatiotemporal image correlation (STIC) technology allows acquisition of a fetal cardiac volume data set and displays a cine loop of a complete single cardiac cycle in motion. Part 1 of this 2-part article reviews STIC technology and its features, the importance of operator training/experience, and acquisition of high-quality STIC volumes, as well as factors that affect STIC volume acquisition rates. We also propose a detailed and practical stepwise approach to performing 4-dim… Show more

“…Adequate education and training of sonologists is an essential step to assure that: 1) STIC volumes are appropriately acquired in the clinical setting and are of high quality [17,58,62,63]; 2) determination of the appropriateness of such volumes occurs (i.e. STICLoop™); and 3) there is maximal utilization of the features of the FINE method (e.g.…”

“…For clear visualization of the fetal cardiac structures, four-dimensional spatiotemporal image correlation (STIC) volumes should be obtained using the highest quality of acquisition from an apical 4-chamber view, with the fetal spine located between the 5 and 7 o'clock positions, without shadows from the ribs, without fetal or maternal movements or fetal breathing, with an angle of acquisition between 20 and 35° depending on gestational age, and with a normal heart rate [68,69] ( Fig. 8 ).…”

“…This article is part 2 of a 2‐part series on 4‐dimensional (4D) sonography with STIC. Part 1 focused on STIC technology and its features, the importance of operator training/experience and acquisition of high‐quality STIC volumes, factors that affect STIC volume acquisition rates, and general recommendations on performing 4D sonography with STIC 1 . In part 2, we discuss a detailed and practical stepwise approach for STIC volume acquisition, along with methods to determine whether such volumes are appropriate for analysis.…”
