How to define e-cigarette prevalence? Finding clues in the use frequency distribution

Abstract: Objective E-cigarette use has rapidly increased. Recent studies define prevalence using a variety of measures; competing definitions challenge cross-study comparison. We sought to understand patterns of use by investigating the number of days out of the past 30 days when adults had used e-cigarettes. Design We used the 2014 Minnesota Adult Tobacco Survey, a random digit dial population survey (n=9304 adults). Questions included ever using e-cigarettes, number of days used in the past 30 days and reasons for … Show more

“…Thus, our findings confirm the challenge e-cigarettes pose to tobacco researchers and public health communities in the construction of scientific objective measures for understandings user behaviors. 18 Our findings suggest that e-cigarettes users are far from homogeneous in their e-cigarette use behaviors and motivations for adopting e-cigarettes. In contrast to cigarette smokers, e-cigarette users appear to have different levels of involvement with their devices.…”

“…It is important to distinguish established users from non-established users because there is a difference in the reason for e-cigarette initiation in addition to the extent of its use [13]. According to previous studies considering current cigarette smokers, the successful smoking cessation rate was higher among daily or intensive e-cigarette users compared with nondaily or intermittent users [14][15][16].…”

“…This study provides a preliminary investigation into use of e-cigarettes among a highly disadvantaged population of smokers. Future studies should seek to increase the knowledge around current use of e-cigarettes (as definitions of current use are refined 41 ) and to distinguish between nicotine and non-nicotine models and the subsequent generations of e-cigarette models.…”
