How to Investigate the Goal Orientations of Students in Competence-based Pre-Vocational Secondary Education: Choosing the Right Instrument

Abstract: This study explores the psychometric properties of three instruments: a semistructured interview, a questionnaire and a sorting task. The central question is which instrument is most suitable to investigate the goal orientations of students in competence-based pre-vocational secondary education. The questionnaire proved most accurate. The interview provided relevant supplementary information on the goals of the students and underlying motives. The sorting task appeared to be less suitable.

“…Generally, a mastery orientation is considered superior to other orientations when students' learning processes are concerned (Koopman et al, 2008). For example, a student that strives for competence in a certain field is more likely to show a predisposition to learn about this field in a more self-directed manner and to integrate new knowledge and existing knowledge more than a student who is primarily oriented towards achieving well.…”

“…First, the implemented characteristics are often aimed at increasing student engagement and motivation (Deci & Ryan, 2000;Levin, 2000) by making an appeal to students' intrinsic goal orientations underlying their comprehension of learning content (Koopman et al, 2008). Second, it is considered important that students are encouraged to construct their own knowledge in interaction with others (Kanselaar, 2002).…”

“…Only a handful of researchers have conducted qualitative research on goal orientations and/or learning strategies (Cao & Nietfeld, 2007;Dowson & McInerney, 2003;Koopman, Teune, & Beijaard, 2008;Van Etten et al, 2008). Especially, little research has been done in the area with case studies.…”

“…The interview methods were chosen because they were commonly used qualitative methods in researching goal orientations (e.g. Dowson & McInerney, 2003;Koopman et al, 2008). I analyzed the data by a case study technique to present college students' real voices.…”

“…Competency evaluation is the most commonly discussed issue in the articles used as the sample for this research (Battista, Palomba & Vergani, 2009;Schaap, Schaaf & Bruijn, 2011;Ion & Cano, 2011;Koopman, Teune & Beijaard, 2008;Nafukho, Graham & Kacirek, 2009;Mamaqi, Miguel & Olave, 2011). These researches are more focused on identifying the levels of implementation of competency-based achievement evaluations among lecturers and students in educational systems (Ion & Cano, 2011;Schaap, 2011;Nafukho, 2009).…”
