How to obtain individual urine samples from undisturbed marmoset families

Abstract: An apparatus and a method are described, which allow simultaneous urine collection from all individual members of undisturbed marmoset families. The monkeys have been trained, after leaving their sleeping box, to enter single adjacent compartments where they are rewarded. There the monkeys micturate within minutes and the clean urine runs directly into cryotubes. These simultaneously collected urine samples open up the opportunity for investigation of the relationship between endocrine function and behavioral … Show more

“…In case this is not possible, samples should be collected at roughly the same time of day in order to minimize the influence of diurnal variation on hormone levels. In captivity this should not be a problem since it is possible to condition most primates to urine collection by either training them to enter individual cages for a short period of time that allow urine to be collected directly upon voiding (Anzenberger and Gossweiler, 1993;Pryce et al, 1995) or to accept a person collecting a urine sample upon waking (e.g. Ziegler et al, 1993).…”

“…Their diet consisted of a vitamin and calcium-enriched porridge in the morning, fresh fruits and vegetables over midday, as well as gum and mealworms in the afternoon, and water was available ad libitum. A special cage unit that was only accessible in the morning during urine collection (Anzenberger and Gossweiler, 1993) was attached to each home cage. On urine sampling days, mealworms were fed in the urine cages in the morning instead of afternoon.…”

“…In order to collect urine in the common marmoset, the collector entered the animal room, turned on the light, and the test animals had then to enter a urine-collecting apparatus, installed in the front of the home cage (Anzenberger and Gossweiler, 1993). The animals had been previously trained to enter this apparatus.…”
