Abstract: Rick Farmer's article focuses on ways in which academic political scientists can influence policymakers. At the Toronto meeting of the Working Group on Practicing Politics, government political scientists also recognized that academics often are frustrated by the process of getting information from the government and cooperation from officials.

“…Elites are busy. They have demands on their time, including from other researchers, and organizational structures present barriers to access (Morse 2019;Odendahl and Shaw 2002;Peabody et al 1990;Wu and Savić 2010). As a result, researchers may find their calls and emails ignored or be offered only tight timelines or challenging settings for interactions.…”

“…We explained the research goal to the secretaries in previous in-person or phone contacts with the five municipalities, and three of these confirmed dates and times for the interviews. The interviews focused on participants' reflections on the use of websites as a tool to communicate with citizens and their understanding of e-government (Wu & Savić, 2010). The interviews took place in October 2018 and lasted an average of 20 minutes, while the website assessments were conducted between October 2018 and January 2019.…”

“…Unfortunately, two representatives did not reply to the invitation to the interview, even after further contact. Due to their social position, access, and hierarchical position in organizations, these government representatives are considered elite professionals in their field, ultimately limiting researchers' access to them (Eckert, 2020;Empson, 2017;Wu & Savić, 2010).…”
