How to Play Fantasy Sports Strategically (and Win)

Abstract: Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) is a multi-billion dollar industry with millions of annual users and widespread appeal among sports fans across a broad range of popular sports. Building on the recent work of Hunter, Vielma and Zaman (2016), we provide a coherent framework for constructing DFS portfolios where we explicitly model the behavior of other DFS players. We formulate an optimization problem that accurately describes the DFS problem for a risk-neutral decision-maker in both double-up and top-heavy payoff se… Show more

“…Our work can be extended in several directions. One direction is to consider the opponents' behavior when building multiple solutions under the picking winners framework (Haugh & Singal, 2021). This would provide additional insights into the portfolio construction problem and help in building better solutions.…”

“…One notable work is Hunter et al (2016) mentioned above, which provided a greedy heuristic to construct lineups and achieved great success in actual contests. On this basis, Haugh and Singal (2021) provided an optimization framework to account for an opponent's team selection behavior in daily fantasy sports (DFS). Bergman et al (2023) also applied their methodology, namely maximizing the expectation of the largest order statistics, to select lineups for DFS.…”

“…To date, numerous researchers have endeavored to comprehend and enhance team performance in diverse contexts (Haugh and Singal, 2020; Huang and Chen, 2021). However, the identified factors that can contribute to eventual team performance have often been oversimplified, lacking the necessary nuance and granularity (Yu et al , 2019).…”

“…One area that deserves thorough investigation is the coping strategies employed by teams during different encounters (Haugh and Singal, 2020; Kadan et al , 2018), encompassing both winning and losing scenarios. In situations where teams emerge victorious, it is prominent to explore the tradeoff between individual player growth and overall team growth in order to understand how teams balance individual performance and collective success.…”
