Villager participation has become a key breakthrough in rural landscape governance. Using the theory of planned behavior and the norm activation theory as frameworks, this study adopts the structural equation model to explore the influencing mechanism of villager participation in rural micro-landscapes based on data gathered from 414 villagers in a rural micro-landscape construction survey in Jinjiang, China. The results indicate that (1) integrated planned behavior theory and norm activation theory can better explain the influencing mechanism of villagers’ participation in rural micro-landscape construction; (2) perception, norm, attitude, and control dimensions significantly influence villagers’ participation behavior intention. The attitude dimension had the greatest influence, followed by the normative and control dimensions, while the perception dimension had the least influence on the procedure; and (3) according to the mediation results, natural environment perception, social environment perception, personal norm, social norm, participation attitude, result awareness, and self-efficacy all exert indirect effects on participation behavior based on villagers’ participation behavioral intention. The largest median effect value was result awareness, followed by personal norm, participation attitude, natural environment awareness, self-efficacy, and social norm. This study expands the theoretical framework and research content of planned behavior and clarifies the mechanism of the influencing factors of villagers’ participation in rural micro-landscapes, extending the theory of planned behavior to the research field of villagers’ participation, which has a guiding role in promoting the co-construction, co-governance, and sharing of rural landscapes.

Watershed eco-compensation (WEC) is considered a significant environmental policy instrument for watershed ecological protection and management. However, in the legislation and practice of eco-compensation in China, the development of the WEC mechanism is still in the initial stages. In this paper, the institutional opportunities and challenges of WEC are analyzed from the existing policies, laws, and economical instruments. Theoretically, WEC in China has seen a combination of punitive-based “Watershed Ecological Damage Compensation (WEDC)” and incentive-based “Watershed Ecological Protective Compensation (WEPC)”. Through a comparative analysis of domestic and foreign watershed compensation practices, the results demonstrate that most of China’s WEC projects have an insufficient legal basis, a single compensatory subject, insufficient compensation funds, and an imperfect market-oriented compensation mechanism. To improve watershed eco-compensation in China, it is recommended to strengthen legislation, select diversified eco-compensation approaches, and establish a market-based and systematic eco-compensation mechanism for watersheds.

Ecological compensation affects farmers′ livelihoods, as well as sustainability and social equity. Yulin City is the core area of the energy “Golden Triangle” in China. The farmers livelihood strategy model was used to analyse data from a household survey and interviews with selected farmers. The paper analyses the current livelihood strategies of farmers and impact of ecological compensation from the perspective of participation and income. The results showed that: (1) the significant difference between the coal resource development and oil and gas resource development was agricultural planting. Migrant work and non-agricultural self-employment in the coal resource development region were higher than that of the oil and gas resource development region. (2) The income from agricultural planting in the coal resource development region was significantly lower than that of the oil and gas resource development region. The labour, non-agricultural self-employment, and transfer incomes were higher in the coal resource development region than that in the oil and gas resource development region. (3) Ecological compensation has a significant negative effect on participation and income from agricultural planting, as well as a positive effect on participation and income from non-agricultural self-employment. We have proposed measures to strengthen ecological compensation mechanisms and improve the farmers′ livelihoods, in order to inform decision-making and high-quality sustainable development in energy development region.
