How to Succeed in Low-Energy Housing—Path Creation Analysis of Low-Energy Innovation Projects

Abstract: Abstract:The low-energy and the nearly zero-energy buildings trend is calling for radical new innovations from the construction industry. This study uses path creation theory to examine two innovation concepts for low-energy housing in Northern Europe with contrasting outcomes-with one being an apparent market success and the other a disappointment. The results highlight two issues behind the success, one of a systemic nature and the other concerning innovation management. First, the development of energy effi… Show more

“…Our respondents also felt that not knowing someone who owned a net zero energy home was not a significant barrier and this finding points perhaps to the more generalized concept that purchasing a home is more of a personal choice and therefore others influence is limited. In some ways, this is not inconsistent with the assertion that individual attitudes and norms play an important role in the diffusion of innovation as also suggested in the literature with similar findings specifically in regards to house purchases [47].…”

“…Policy changes during the innovation processes have also had influence. For example, energy efficiency subsidies run out during a budget year delaying one project by a year, while another project which initially begun without policy influence had to alter its optimal design type due to the introduction of new building requirements (Pässilä et al 2015).…”

“…Many scholars have explored the topic in different local and national contexts (e.g. Mlecnik 2010Mlecnik , 2013aFawcett 2014;Pässilä et al 2015;Nykamp 2016), while overarching analyses of case studies, in particular, of the peer-reviewed literature are rare. Therefore, we present a systematic review of peer-reviewed academic literature, focusing on case studies, to explore the status and drivers for low energy building innovation in Europe.…”

“…The innovation has been one of the important ways that companies have dealt with environmental issues [3]. The innovation can encourage sustainable use of products and services, or facilitate wider adoption of new environmentally friendly technologies [4] [5]. Plambeck (2013) [6] describes five "cleantech" firms (ZETA, First Solar, Better Place, Amyris, and Calera) and calls for guidelines on how the operations management community can stimulate innovation that promotes environmental sustainability.…”
