How to Use Localized Surface Plasmon for Monitoring the Adsorption of Thiol Molecules on Gold Nanoparticles?

Abstract: The functionalization of spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in solution with thiol molecules is essential for further developing their applications. AuNPs exhibit a clear localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) at 520 nm in water for 20 nm size nanoparticles, which is extremely sensitive to the local surface chemistry. In this study, we revisit the use of UV-visible spectroscopy for monitoring the LSPR peak and investigate the progressive reaction of thiol molecules on 22 nm gold nanoparticles. FTIR spect… Show more

“…In particular, the redshift of the LSPR is a clear indication that the ITO NC dielectric environment has changed due to the progressive adsorption of HBC–AOM. 27 The absence of a substantial broadening of the LSPR in the functionalized mixture (Fig. S8c † ) allows us also to exclude any effect due to the aggregation of the NCs.…”

“…In contrast, the negatively charged borohydride ions are adsorbed onto the surface of the electropositive silver core. 51 These two interactions alter the electron cloud around the nanoparticles differently, affecting how the incoming optical signal interacts with the nanoparticle. This is the reason for the enhanced nonlinear optical properties of the CoA-conjugated AgNP compared to organic compounds.…”

“…In this case, a nanoparticle should be also regarded as a ''core-shell'' structure with its intrinsic red shift immersed in a homogeneous dielectric medium, which creates an additional size independent red shift. 47,48 In each case, this requires a more precise calculation.…”
