How User Experience Changes over Time: A Case Study of Social Network Services

Abstract: While interacting with a product or a service, people have diverse experiences, which constitute user experience (UX). In this study, the hierarchical dimensions of UX were considered, including overall UX, its elements (usability, affect, and user value) and their subelements. To determine how UX changes over time, the temporal changes of the influence of each element and subelement were analyzed. Twenty subjects participated in a longitudinal experiment by using a social network service (SNS). The most impor… Show more

“…To understand it, we applied a cross-sectional approach (Kim et al, 2014). Following this approach, we compared the data from users with different levels of experience, from the initial course (who were having their first contact with computers and Internet) to the advanced level course (more established ICT users).…”

“…In the same vein, researchers on user value have argued that users' previous experience with a tool influences their user experience when interacting with similar products (Boztepe, 2007;Kim et al, 2014). Several authors (Illich, 1973;Sen, 1999;and Johri & Pal, 2012) have discussed the importance of technologies that enrich people's lives besides fulfilling their basic needs in developing countries.…”

“…Although some researchers still favor more objective measures over subjective verbal reports, psychophysical rating as a subjective measure indeed has shown tangible evidence of being a competitive measure compared to objective measures (Gescheider, ; Stevens, ). In addition, modified magnitude estimation, among various psychophysical measures, has been employed in many fields, including social science, cognitive engineering, medical science, and HCI (Calisir & Calisir, ; Casaló, Flavián, & Guinalíu, ; Cho, Park, Han, & Kang, ; Chou & Hsiao, ; Holmes & Rahe, ; Hong, Han, & Kim, ; Kim, Han, Park, & Park, ; Park & Han, ; Park et al., ; Park, Han, Kim, Cho, & Park, ; Park, Han, Kim, Oh & Moon, ; Rollman, ; Tuch, Roth, Hornbæk, Opwis, & Bargas‐Avila, ).…”

“…Fifteen elements of user value (Table ), nine representative features of smartphones (Table ), and two points of time in the ownership were used to build the matrix. The points of time in the ownership (i.e., just after purchase and after enough time to learn) was included in the matrix analysis since time might be one of the most important factors of user's experience (Karapanos, Zimmerman, Forlizzi, & Martens, ; H. K. Kim, Han, Park, & Park, ). Karapanos et al () insisted that emotional attachment on certain consumer products increases as time passes.…”
