HPA stability for children in foster care: Mental health implications and moderation by early intervention

Abstract: Research on stress-sensitive biological systems has typically focused on activation at one time, yet recent theories emphasize dynamic, context-specific adaptation. This study tested hypothesized calibration of one such system by examining both mean levels and longitudinal stability of daily cortisol—reflecting hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activation—in children exposed to high-risk versus lower-risk caregiving contexts. Context-specific effects of longitudinal cortisol profiles were addressed via relat… Show more

“…Researchers should use developmental cascade models to test changes in the strength of transactional and interactive effects among physiology, self‐regulation, and environment across time. Since the effect of biological sensitivity on adaptation differs along the continuum of adversity , we need to use analyses such as moderated mediation and multilevel modeling to identify how both the stability of physiological response and its time‐varying effect differ for low‐ and high‐risk groups .…”

“…However, to the best or our knowledge, there are only few studies targeting individuals in residential care (e.g. [81]). Our study shows that neurobiological research is feasible in this field and offers new insight into physiological changes that accompany TIC.…”

“…Child refusal or resistance to participation in saliva sampling was reported by a number of research teams, and refusal or resistance varied by age, sampling procedure, and child characteristics (Bair‐Merritt et al, ; Fisher et al, ; Laurent, Gilliam, Bruce, & Fisher, ; Saridjan et al, ; Vermeer et al, ). Groschl, Rauh and Dorr () noted that salivettes may be inappropriate for saliva collection in young infants because they are unable to keep a large swab in their small mouths.…”
