HPLC-DAD finger printing, antioxidant, cholinesterase, and α-glucosidase inhibitory potentials of a novel plant Olax nana

Abstract: BackgroundThe medicinal importance of a novel plant Olax nana Wall. ex Benth. (family: Olacaceae) was revealed for the first time via HPLC-DAD finger printing, qualitative phytochemical analysis, antioxidant, cholinesterase, and α-glucosidase inhibitory assays.MethodsThe crude methanolic extract of O. nana (ON-Cr) was subjected to qualitative phytochemical analysis and HPLC-DAD finger printing. The antioxidant potential of ON-Cr was assessed via 1,1-diphenyl,2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azinobis[3-ethylbenzthi… Show more

“…Another pentacyclic triterpenoid, asiatic acid ( 19 ), isolated from Centella asiatica , also showed 80% growth inhibition of human colorectal (SW480), human stomach (SNU668), and murine colorectal adenocarcinoma (CT26) cell lines with IC 50 values of 20 µg/mL [ 75 ]. The fresh fruit of Cucumis prophetarum from Saudi Arabia yielded a series of cucurbitacin and analogs (cucurbitacin E ( 20 ), cucurbitacin B ( 21 ), cucurbitacin D ( 22 ), cucurbitacin F 25- O -acetate, cucurbitacin E glucoside ( 23 ), dihydrocucurbitacin D, hexanor-cucurbitacin D, and isocucurbitacin D ( 24 )), of which compounds 20 – 24 showed cytotoxic activity against MCF-7, MDA MB 231, A2780, A2780 CP, HepG2, and HCT-116 with IC 50 values ranging from 1 to 27.3 µM [ 76 ].…”

“…Furthermore, limonene seems to induce apoptosis in Trypanosoma cruzi , accompanied by fragmentation of the parasite’s DNA [ 21 ]. This terpene can similarly modulate specific aspects of the immune response in treated animals, including an increase in nitric oxide production in peritoneal macrophages of BALB/c mice [ 14 , 22 , 23 ].…”

“…For phytochemical screening, 25 g of pulverized plant leaves was extracted with 125 mL of three solvents namely; ethanol, distilled water and ethanol/water (1:1) for 72 h. The plant extracts were filtered and concentrated using rotary evaporator under reduced pressure. Preliminary phytochemical analysis was carried out to test for the presence of tannins, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, anthocyanins, betacyanins, quinones, glycosides, cardiac glycosides, terpenoids, triterpenoids, phenols, coumarins, steroids and acids in all the three extracts following the standard test methods [3] , [4] .…”
