HPV Vaccination Completion and Compliance with Recommended Dosing Intervals Among Female and Male Adolescents in an Inner-City Community Health Center

Abstract: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination continues to lag behind other adolescent vaccines, especially in areas with pervasive disparities in HPV-related cancers. The purpose of this study was to examine HPV vaccine completion and dosing intervals among low-income adolescents in urban areas. The study included electronic health record data on HPV vaccination for 872 adolescents who received at least one dose of the HPV vaccine. Only 28.4% completed the 3-dose series. “…In order to improve HPV vaccination, it is essential to understand current patterns of HPV vaccination. While previous research has primarily focused on HPV vaccine initiation and completion among adolescent girls, the adherence of recommended HPV dose schedules has not been well assessed [17] , [18] , [19] , [20] , [21] , [22] . The objectives of this study were to: (1) examine HPV vaccine completion and dose adherence among commercially insured females who were aged 9 through 26 years old and had initiated HPV vaccination; (2) identify factors associated with HPV vaccine completion and dose adherence among these females.…”

“…As an aside, completion of full human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is subject to age, rural vs. urban location, parental hesitancy/refusal and cultural factors [37,38]. In this example, which utilizes a very effective agent, effectiveness at the population level is limited by these barriers to utilization so that the role of the process assumes great importance even with a very effective vaccination tool.…”
