Human and Bovine Dentin Composition and Its Hybridization Mechanism Assessed by FT-Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract: FT-Raman spectroscopy was used to study the human and bovine dentin and their interactions with adhesive systems. Ten human (H) molars and ten bovine (B) teeth were prepared exposing the dentin and then each specimen was divided into two parts. The resulted forty dentin segments were treated either with the total-etch one bottle adhesive (Prime & Bond 2.1, PB) or with the single-step self-etching adhesive (Xeno III, X) and divided into four groups: HPB (control), HX, BPB, and BX. Each group was analyzed by… Show more

“…The composition of human enamel and dentin is similar to the composition of bovine dental structures [ 12 ]. It has been reported that the adhesion to the superficial layer of dentin showed no significant difference between human and bovine dentin [ 11 ]. The morphology of coronal dentin and enamel is similar when comparing bovine and human teeth.…”

“…Higher radiodensity was reported for bovine than for human dentin [Fonseca et al, 2008], although a similar study [Tanaka et al, 2008] came to the opposite conclusion. Investigations into the tissues' mineral content could not be retrieved, although a recent study [Soares et al, 2013] hinted at some differences in organic and inorganic content between dentin substrates. Furthermore, only very few comparative studies on human and bovine root caries lesion pro-and regression have been reported.…”
