Human consumption of meat from roadkilled animals in the southwestern Amazon

Abstract: The harvest of meat from wild animals is essential for the nutrition of many human populations in the Neotropics. Specific techniques are used to access wild meat in this region, but collecting meat from road killed animals, or purposely run over animals to kill and consume the meat have not been documented so far. In this study we interviewed four residents of the state of Rondônia who claimed to consume roadkilled animals. Respondents cited only medium and large mammals (10 species in total) as the group fro… Show more

“…Roadkill is the most visible negative effect of roads on biodiversity (Forman and Alexander 1998;Ferreira et al 2023;Oliveira et al 2023), and one that can cause major environmental impacts, such as extinctions of local populations (Barrientos et al 2021;Tres et al 2024). Therefore, it is considered a major problem for PAs (Collison et al 2019).…”

“…Residents of urban centers frequent the rural or peri-urban environment to hunt for either food supplementation or commercialization [ 20 ]. Comparative analysis between these two types of hunters in the Amazon is restricted to the use of zootherapeutics [ 33 ] and the relationship of potentially hunted species with those captured [ 34 ]. In general, these hunters conduct hunting to meet different motivations, which include commercialization, medicinal use, subsistence, conflict retaliation, and recreation [ 20 , 28 , 35 37 ].…”

“…Species hunted and cited exclusively by each hunter group had a maximum of three citations, representing less than 5% of the total number of citations.Although other studies indicate the killing of felines aimed at control or retaliation(Lima et al, 2020), we observed that the capture of these animals was motivated by both retaliation and consumption. Consumption of the meat of large cats is a one-off behavior that is rarely recorded in the Amazon (Srbek-Araujo 2015;Oliveira et al, 2023) and in other areas of the world (Braga-Pereira et al, 2021).…”
