Human Granulocytic Anaplasmosis in the United States from 2008 to 2012: A Summary of National Surveillance Data

Abstract: Abstract. Human granulocytic anaplasmosis is an acute, febrile illness transmitted by the ticks Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus in the United States. We present a summary of passive surveillance data for cases of anaplasmosis with onset during 2008-2012. The overall reported incidence rate (IR) was 6.3 cases per million person-years. Cases were reported from 38 states and from New York City, with the highest incidence in Minnesota (IR = 97), Wisconsin (IR = 79), and Rhode Island (IR = 51). Thirty-seven … Show more

“…Lyme borreliosis (LB) and anaplasmosis (AN) are common among people and dogs in much of the eastern USA, and several studies document a growing risk of infection concomitant with increasing tick populations and continued expansion of the geographical area where these pathogens are known to be transmitted [4,[21][22][23][24]. Canine serology has been shown to be an indicator of human disease risk in a given region [13,14,25].…”

“…Compared with Lyme disease, the incidence of reported anaplasmosis, Powassan virus disease, and babesiosis is several orders of magnitude lower, and their geographic distribution appears to be similar but more restricted; like the distribution of Lyme disease cases, the geographic range of anaplasmosis and babesiosis has similarly spread over time (Figure 4) [7,19,95,98,99]. Over 96% of Lyme disease cases are reported from just 14 states in the northeast, mid-Atlantic and the upper Midwest [95].…”
