Human Health Effects of Lactose Consumption as a Food and Drug Ingredient

Abstract: : Lactose is a reducing sugar consisting of galactose and glucose, linked by a β (1→4) glycosidic bond, considered as an antioxidant due to its α-hydroxycarbonyl group. Lactose is widely ingested through the milk and other unfermented dairy products and is considered to be one of the primary foods. On the other hand, lactose is also considered as one of the most widely used excipients for the development of pharmaceutical formulations. In this sense, lactose has been related to numerous drug-excipient or drug-… Show more

“…The term LI refers to the emergence of GI symptoms particularly bloating, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea after the consumption of lactoserich food items (6,25,26) (Figure 1). The deficiency of β-galactosidase is also known as hypolactasia, which results in an inefficient breakdown of lactose and leads to lactose maldigestion (LM).…”

“…After this phase, they should receive complementary foods as they continue to be breastfed, at least until the age of two [6,[17][18][19]. However, in some situations, breastfeeding is not possible or advisable due to issues related to the mother's health [20][21][22] or due to the baby's health [23]. For these cases, international scientific medical societies recommend that when all strategies for maintaining breastfeeding are exhausted, the infant milk formulas should be used [20,24].…”

“…Whereas the supply of lactose-rich ingredients has been growing because of the production of and demand for higher protein dairy ingredients (MPC, WPC, and WPI), the demand for high-lactose ingredients has not kept up. Though the clinical condition lactose intolerance is not common (~10% of the population), varying degrees of lactose maldigestion and malabsorption are common (~66% of the population) worldwide ( Oak and Jha, 2019 ; Seoane et al, 2020 ; Jansson-Knodell et al, 2022 ). Additionally, some consumers wrongly associate symptoms of a variety of intestinal disorders with lactose intolerance, without undergoing testing, and therefore unnecessarily avoid dairy foods ( Suchy et al, 2010 ).…”
