Abstract:Human immunodeficiency viruses (HIVs) are enveloped plus‐stranded RNA viruses. HIV viruses are classified based on phylogenetic relatedness of nucleotide sequences. Serum and plasma are the most common specimen types used for routine HIV antibody and antigen determinations in the laboratory.
