Human mating strategies: from past causes to present consequences

Abstract: In both humans and nonhuman animals, mating strategies represent a set of evolutionary adaptations aimed at promoting individual fitness by means of reproduction with the best possible partners. Given this critical role, mating strategies influence numerous aspects of human life. In particular, between-sex divergence in the intensity of intrasexual competition could account for robust cross-cultural sex differences in psychology and behavior (e.g., personality, psychiatric disorders, social behavior, violence)… Show more

“…Finally, sex of the participant explained a significant amount of variance in short-term mating, with men expressing a stronger orientation to short-term mating compared to women. This supports previous research (e.g., Buss, 2013;Buss & Schmitt, 2019;Marzoli, Havlíček, & Roberts, 2018), and indicates participant's sex may play a significantly more important role in short-term mating compared to dark personality traits.…”

“…One may argue that these associations might in fact be stronger if we further specify the attractiveness ratings such as sexual or long-term partner attractiveness. While we agree that such approach is useful when working within a specific society, the same cannot be said for cross-cultural research with highly variable types of relationships 98 , 99 . Based on two competing perspectives, the more masculine men should be either preferred in harsher environments (vs favorable environments) or in large-scale urban societies (vs small-scale rural societies).…”

“…Typical examples of the areas of research that endorse 'nature' argument are sociobiology (Buss, 1994;Buss & Schmitt, 1993;Marzoli, Havlíček, & Roberts, 2018;E. O. Wilson, 1975) and cognitive biology (Hines, 1982(Hines, , 2008Van Goozen et al, 1995).…”

“…Researchers of sociobiology assume that the behaviours of both animals and humans are driven by survival instinct, that is, the desire to pass their genes on to the next generations (Lindsey, 2016;Lips, 2019). As a result, in the evolutionary process of increasing survival rate across generations, males and females have different strategies in mating and caring for offspring (Buss, 1994;Buss & Schmitt, 1993;Marzoli et al, 2018;E. O. Wilson, 1975).…”
