Human migration and the environment

Abstract: Environmental factors have shaped human migration since the origin of Homo sapiens. Indeed, the relationship between migration and the environment has been at the core of population-environment studies. Further, fueled by contemporary concerns with the impacts of global climate change on human populations, substantial public and policy dialogue has inspired additional scholarship on the migration-environment connection. This collection of manuscripts has been crafted to add to the intellectual foundation under… Show more

“…Subjectivities related to environmental perceptions and their role in migration are also areas of potential sociological contribution (Adamo & Izazola 2010). Migration-environment research offers important opportunities for advancements in sociological theorizing through extensions to a variety of frameworks including world systems theory (Sassen 2011) and ideas of the conjoint constitution of social and natural phenomena (Freudenburg et al 1995).…”

“…Rural farmers and livestock keepers in developing countries make migration decisions as part of complex livelihood strategies. Recent scholarship advances our understanding of migration in and around natural resource and biodiversity areas specifically (Scholte andde Groot 2010, Hoffman et al 2011), and in the context of changing climate and environments more generally (Adamo and Izazola 2010, Black et al 2011, Adger et al 2015. Conceptual models predict migration behavior from how environmental change differentially shapes household livelihoods (e.g., Black et al 2011).…”

“…The study of linkages between climate change and migration constitutes on-going research [28][29][30][31][32]. The relationship between migration and environment usually starts with linkages between population processes and environmental change, often with an emphasis on migration caused by environmental change.…”
