Background:The burden of STIs in Pakistan is much larger than reported. Various research studies indicate that the knowledge of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in the women is low. The objective of this study is to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practice regarding STIs, HPV and sexual behaviors of contraceptive practice among women in Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: The current study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Karachi from Aug 2014-Aug 2015, including 600 women (aged 19-50 years) by convenience sampling technique from waiting areas of out-patient clinics. Results: The mean age of participants was 39.5 ± 10.7 years. Eighty eight percent women (n = 529) were married, 8% (n = 50) female were unmarried and around 3% (n = 19) female were divorced, separated or widowed. Participants with no knowledge about STIs and viruses causing some cancers were 57% (n = 341) and 70% (n = 418) respectively. There was no knowledge about Pap smear in 80% (n = 479) of study population and the proportion of women not attending the annual gynecological examination were 88% (n = 525). Vaccine acceptability was found to be as low as 38% (n = 225). A similar trend 12% (n = 71) was seen in the response about willing to pay by themselves for the vaccination cost. Conclusion: The current study highlights inadequate knowledge about STDS, HPV, cervical cancer and its screening among women. Public health awareness programs should be raised at community level in order to increase the health seeking behavior of women.

ÖZETAmaç: Sağlık çalışanlarının halkı bilgilendirmedeki etkin rolü göz önüne alındığında hemşirelik öğrencileri, tıp öğrencileri ve hemşirelerin serviks kanseri, HPV ve HPV aşıları hakkındaki bilinç düzeyinin tespit edilmesini ve bilinçlendirme ihtiyacının araştırılmasını amaçladık ve İstanbul Bilim Üniversitesi öğrencileri ve afiliye hastanelerdeki sağlık çalışanlarının HPV ve serviks kanseri hakkındaki bilgilerini değerlendirdik. Gereç ve yöntem:Sağlık personeli, toplumu bilgilendirme ve yönlendirme yaptığı için, anket, tıp fakültesi ilk 3 yıl öğrencilerine, hemşirelik öğrencilerine ve hemşirelere yapıldı. Dördüncü sınıftan itibaren jinekoloji derslerinin başlamasıyla birlikte bilinç yerini bilgiye bıraktığı için sadece ilk üç yıldaki tıp öğrencileri seçilmiştir. Anket sorularını cevaplandırması istenen 743 katılımcının 603 tanesi (% 81,2) anketimizi cevaplamayı kabul etti. Daha sonra kimlik bilgisi istenmeyen anketler değerlendirmeye alındı. Bulgular:Hemşireler ve hemşirelik öğrencileri, tıp fakültesi öğrencileri (ilk 3 yıl) ve diğer sağlık çalışanlarıyla kıyaslandığında smear test konusunda daha bilgiliydiler. Katılımcıların sadece %52'si kızlarının aşılanmasına itiraz etmeyeceğini beyan etti. Aşıyı kabul etmeyenlerin kabul etmeme gerekçeleri aşının güvenirliliği hakkındaki endişeler (% 41), aşının maliyeti (%10) ve aşılanmadan sonra cinsel ilişki serbestisinin onaylanması fikri (%5) idi. Dini konular engel olarak değerlendirilmedi.Sonuç: HPV, serviks kanseri ve HPV aşıları hakkındaki farkındalığın artırılması gerekmektedir.Anahtar kelimeler: HPV, HPV aşıları, serviks kanseri, bilinç düzeyi ABSTRACT Objectives: Establishment of the knowledge and the need to make conscious in medicine students, nursing students and nurses due to the effective role of updating conscious of the health workers, we aimed to assess the knowledge of nurses and students of İstanbul Bilim University and affiliated hospitals about HPV and cervical cancer. Materials and methods:Because healthcare personnel illuminate and influences the public, the survey was conducted to medicine students of the first three years, nursing students and nurses. The reason of choosing the first three years of medicine students is with the begining of the gynecology courses at the 4th year of education in medical faculty, learning takes the place of awareness. Totally 743 participants were asked to survey but 603 subjects responded (81.2%) then the surveys that was not asked for the identity information were taken into consideration Results: Nurses and students of nursing had better knowledge about smear test when compared to students of medicine (first 3 years) and other healthcare personnel. Only 52% accepted to get a daughter vaccinated. The main reasons for vaccine rejection were the concerns about vaccine safety (41%), cost of the vaccine (10%) and sexual promiscuity (5%) after vaccination. RESUMENAntecedentes: Es necesario realizar diagnósticos sobre conocimientos, comportamientos y percepción del riesgo a la infección del virus de Papiloma Humano (VPH), como base para desarrollar intervenciones efectivas que reduzcan la vulnerabilidad al VPH entre adolescentes y adultos jóvenes.Objetivo: Establecer indicadores de validez de contenido de un cuestionario que mide conocimientos y disposición para actuar preventivamente frente al VPH en adolescentes y adultos jóvenes. Metodología:El cuestionario fue evaluado por 16 expertos con el fin de determinar su estructura conceptual y el nivel de concordancia sobre la claridad y la redacción de los ítems. Este también se aplicó a 42 universitarios a quienes se les realizó entrevista cognitiva con el fin de ajustar léxico, instrucciones y forma de redacción de los ítems.Resultados: Se estimó el índice de concordancia entre expertos en cuanto a redacción y claridad de los ítems cuestionario (0.88) y para las cuatro dimensiones (0.81 -0.96). La estructura conceptual del Enfermería Global Nº 35 Julio 2014Página 212 cuestionario se determinó mediante la aplicación de la metodología de concept mapping, para ello se realizó un Análisis de Escalamiento Multidimensional no métrico de ALSCAL (Alternating Least Squared Scaling) con una solución para dos dimensiones (Stress = 12%) y un análisis jerárquico de conglomerados utilizando el método de Ward; además se estimó el estadístico de bridging para cada ítem con respecto al conglomerado. Estos datos sugieren que el cuestionario mide cuatro dimensiones: perfil sociodemográfico, comportamiento sexual, conocimiento de transmisión y conocimiento de prevención. Conclusiones:El cuestionario presenta indicadores adecuados de validez de contenido para medir conocimientos y prácticas preventivas asociadas al (VPH) desde la perspectiva de la vulnerabilidad en adolescentes y adultos jóvenes. ABSTRACTBackground: Accurate diagnosis about knowledge, behavior and risk perception relative to the HPV virus is a cornerstone to design effective interventions related to the promotion, prevention and reduction of the individual vulnerability to HPV among adolescents and young adults.
