Human Papillomavirus-Related Cancers Among People Living With AIDS in Puerto Rico

Abstract: The objective of this study was to estimate the incidence of cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV)–related cancers and the risk of death (by cancer status) among people living with AIDS (PLWA) in Puerto Rico. We used data from the Puerto Rico AIDS Surveillance Program and Central Cancer Registry (1985–2005). Cancers with highest incidence were cervix (299.6/100,000) for women and oral cavity/oropharynx for men (150.0/100,000); the greatest excess of cancer incidence for men (standardized incidence ratio, 86.8)… Show more

“…With the increase in the survival of HIV+ women due to HAART, there is an increased opportunity for the progression of oncogenic viral infections into malignancies, particularly in HPV-associated oral, genital, and anal cancers (Adler, 2010;Piketty et al, 2012;Ortiz , 2014). Currently, the HIV/AIDS pandemic is predominantly impacting the poorest and the youngest in resource-limited settings.…”

“…One study in Italy showed an increased risk of tonsil cancer (SIR = 10.9, 95% CI: 1.2–39.4) in HIV‐infected men (Franzetti et al , ). Another study from Puerto Rico found an increased risk of oral‐pharyngeal cancer in HIV‐infected women (SIR = 10.9, 95% CI: 1.26–37.6) (Ortiz et al , ). Other studies have reported significant albeit lower risks than these two studies – ranging from an SIR of 1.6 (95% CI: 1.2–2.1) in the USA (Chaturvedi et al , ) to 1.9 (95% CI: 1.8–2.1) in Northern Italy (Calabresi et al , ).…”

“…Moreover, in HIV+ women, CC tends to respond poorly to recommended therapies, becomes more aggressive, and may have a worse prognosis [6]. With the increase in survival of HIV+ women due to HAART, progression of oncogenic viral infection into malignancy may result in an increased incidence of HPVassociated oropharyngeal, genital, and anal cancers [8][9][10].…”
