Addressing metacognitive functions has been shown to improve performance at the individual, team, group, and organizational levels. Metacognition is beginning to surface as an added cognate discipline for the field of human performance technology (HPT). Advances from research in the fields of cognition and metacognition offer a place for HPT to expand its theoretical base. This article summarizes current theories of metacognition and presents a new metacognitive model for HPT.HUMAN PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGY (HPT) is a multidisciplinary practice that includes as its core systems theory and behavioral psychology. It has also been influenced by, and remains in support of, a number of other disciplines, such as economics, education, organization development, human resource development, training and development, and cognitive psychology. Irlbeck (2002) analyzed the historical definitions of HPT and identified three recurring themes: a systems approach, references to performance, and a focus on individuals, groups, and organizations. HPT and the International Society of Performance Improvement (ISPI), the publication for HPT, "maintain reference to the human side of the equation by alluding to individuals, groups, and/or organizations" (Irlbeck, 2002, p. 93).As part of HPT's core, the human side stems from a number of cognate disciplines. Huglin (2009) identified these disciplines by looking at the citations used in ISPI journals (Performance Improvement, Improving Human Performance: A Research Quarterly, and Performance Improvement Quarterly) and the three editions of the Handbook of Human Performance Technology. This research identified the top five primary subject categories that were cited: psychology, business and economics (management), education, business and economics, and education (teaching methods and curriculum).By visiting the ISPI web page (http://www.ispi.org) I conducted a search for "metacognition" within Performance Improvement. This search resulted in a total of 11 articles from Performance Improvement. The same search was conducted within Performance Improvement Quarterly, which resulted in 20 articles from Performance Improvement Quarterly. With psychology being the primary subject category for citations within ISPI journals, metacognition is only beginning to surface as a notable cognate discipline within the HPT field. This article takes a cognitive approach toward metacognition by developing a new metacognitive model for HPT.This article first looks at the field of cognition, followed by a review of key elements of metacognition as applied to the four knowledge domains: declarative, knowledge, procedural, and conditional knowledge. Next I review the benefits that a new theory or model of metacognition could have for the field of HPT. I end with a discussion of existing metacognitive models and an introduction to a new metacognitive model for HPT.
