Human Plasma Glycome in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract: Over a half of all proteins are glycosylated, and their proper glycosylation is essential for normal function. Unfortunately, because of structural complexity of nonlinear branched glycans and the absence of genetic template for their synthesis, the knowledge about glycans is lagging significantly behind the knowledge about proteins or DNA. Using a recently developed quantitative high throughput glycan analysis method we quantified components of the plasma N-glycome in 99 children with attention-deficit hypera… Show more

“…Approximately 1% of the human genome encodes genes involved in glycosylation and over half of all proteins are N-glycosylated (Freeze 1998;Pivac et al 2011). Glycoproteins are central to many key biological systems such as cell-cell signaling, and are important in coagulation, immunity, fertility, etc.…”

“…To reinforce our findings we searched for associations in an independent population with more severe renal phenotype To determine whether the findings were restricted to IgG or to a more general change in glycosylation of multiple proteins, we searched for association between total plasma glycome 25,26 and eGFR in a subset 426 individuals (eGFR, mL/min/1.73 m 2 : 78.95616.00). We found no difference in plasma glycosylation, suggesting that the effects we see here are likely direct effects of IgG glycosylation.…”
