Social workers have been grappling with social, economic, and political issues relating to human rights since the profession's inception. It is only recently that there has been explicit recognition of human rights as core principles on which work toward social justice rests. Throughout the world, human rights are considered to be a common benchmark of basic achievement for all peoples and nations. Human rights establish a set of well-defined and accessible principles and standards for social work. They can form the basis of a comprehensive approach to social work practice and increase universality of the profession by creating a clear standard of principles to guide practice and theory. An increasing number of scholars and practitioners in the USA have articulated a convincing case regarding the fit between social work values and human rights principles and the ways in which such principles have relevance to every level of social work theory and practice.

Educación en Derechos Humanos para el Trabajo Social en Chile: una mirada desde los estándares internacionales

Este trabajo busca analizar la formación en derechos humanos para el Trabajo Social desde la perspectiva de los estándares internacionales. Mediante la metodología mixta se analizan los planes de formación de las Escuelas de Trabajo Social de universidades en Chile. La muestra quedó conformada por un total de 32 universidades y 158 programas de asignatura. Los hallazgos muestran que del conjunto de programas analizados se identificó un total de 116 referencias a estándares internacionales de derechos humanos. Sin embargo, estos se distribuyen de manera dispar según la categoría analizada. Los resultados sugieren una baja presencia de contenidos de derechos humanos de acuerdo a los estándares internacionales. Por último, se proporcionan recomendaciones para un mayor desarrollo de la educación en derechos humanos para la formación en trabajo social.

Human rights and social justice are recognized as integral to social work education. Previous research shows a variety of means are being used to teach human rights and social justice yet relatively little is known about the teaching methods used in social work programs and about the type of knowledge and skills delivered. This survey of social work programs across the United States found that three fourths of all responding programs teach social justice and human rights, yet social justice was more prevalent in the curricula and as an area of faculty expertise. Content on social justice and human rights was most likely to be integrated throughout required courses and in courses focused on cultural diversity and policy. It is recommended that additional resources should be developed for social work educators to learn about human rights and its relation to social justice to develop rightsbased skills and approaches among students.
