Human settlement analysis based on multi-temporal remote sensing data: A case study of Xuzhou City, China

Abstract: To evaluate urban human settlement, we propose a human settlement environment development index (HSEDI) model by choosing vegetation coverage, land surface temperature, impervious surfaces, slope, wetness, and water condition as the evaluation factors. We applied the proposed model to Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China. Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) images from 1998 to 2010 and digital elevation model (DEM) data with a 30-m resolution were used to calculate the values of the six evaluation factors. The HSED… Show more

“…As an objective and real-time RS data to record the light intensity of ground buildings and roads, nighttime light RS images [ 27 , 28 ] have been widely used in the identification and monitoring of social production and life [ 29 31 ]. According to the research results of Lu et al (2008), nighttime light data is selected as the evaluation index of the humanity factors of suitability of human settlement environment in Qingdao [ 32 ], denoted as Nighttime Light RS index.…”

“…There is a lot of research literatures on the relationship between human ecological settlement environment and economy with the focus on the impact of economy on human ecological settlement environment and the relationship between economy and ecological environment. The development of the human ecological settlement environment cannot be separated from the economy, which is not only an important factor affecting the human ecological settlement environment, but also an important factor leading to the differences of the human ecological settlement environment in different regions [1][2]. The ecological environment influences the living environment of the city and then the human ecological settlement environment [3].…”

“…The weight of indicators directly determines the reliability of the evaluation results. The methods such as expert scoring, analytic hierarchy process, and comprehensive evaluation approach were used to calculate the weight [9,23]. However, the methods of the above are subjective, which may lead to a lack of objectivity in evaluation results.…”
