Human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-related endogenous sequence, HRES-1, encodes a 28-kDa protein: a possible autoantigen for HTLV-I gag-reactive autoantibodies.

Abstract: The presence of a human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-related endogenous sequence, HRES-1, in the human genome has been documented. The HRES-1 genomic locus is transcriptionally active and contains open reading frames. Antibodies 232 and 233, specific for synthetic peptides pepl4-24 and pepll7-127, corresponding to two nonoverlapping HTLV-related regions in the longer open reading frame of HRES-1, recognize an identical 28-kDa protein in H9 human T cells. Thus, HRES-1 is a human endogenous retroviral sequen… Show more

“…The human endogenous retroviral sequence termed HRES-1 could be overexpressed in salivary gland epithelium of patients with SS (31). Anti-HRES-l/p28 antibodies, which can cross-react with HTLV-I gag p24 polypeptide, were found in 10% of SS patients (32). Recently, another gag antigen of HTLV-I, p19, was detected in LSG epithelial cells from -30% of SS patients, and not from control subjects (33).…”

“…After incubation for 1 h, the plates were washed with 0.1% Tween-20 in PBS. The plates were then further incubated with horseradish peroxidase-conjugated secondary antibodies, washed with 0.1% Tween-20 in PBS, and developed with 2,2'-azino-bis(2-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) as earlier described [25].…”

“…Interestingly, this region of CA shares limited sequence similarity with the SS-B autoantigen (23) (Figure 1). Banki et a1 (6) found that reactivities to peptides with this sequence were elevated in some SS patients and patients with other systemic autoimmune diseases, relative to that in healthy control subjects.…”

“…In addition to these studies, Banki and coworkers (6) suggested that, based on the results of serologic studies, an HTLV-related endogenous sequence (HRES-1) might be involved in SS and other systemic autoimmune diseases. Thus, comparisons of the sequences of HIAP and HRES-1 to sequences of the HTLV-related proviruses detected in some SS patients by Sumida et a1 and Mariette et a1 are warranted.…”
