Human thermal perception related to Föhn winds due to Saharan dust outbreaks in Crete Island, Greece

Abstract: Crete Island is located in the southmost border of East Mediterranean basin, facing exacerbating atmospheric conditions (mainly concentrations of particulates) due to Saharan dust outbreaks. It is worth to note that these episodes are more frequent during spring and autumn, when mild biometeorological conditions become intolerable due to the synergy of the so called Föhn winds. Cretan mountains, especially Psiloritis Mt. (summit at 2456 m), are orientated perpendicularly to the southwest air mass flow, generat… Show more

“…Strong weather stimuli may exacerbate symptoms in people with mental illnesses [1][2][3][4]. At such times, people sensitive to weather conditions may experience headaches and dizziness [5,6], changes in blood pressure [7], aggression [8], and accelerated heart rates [4]. Researchers in different countries have determined that patients suffering from anxiety [9], depression [3], schizophrenia [10,11], and bipolar disorder [12][13][14] are particularly vulnerable to changes in the weather.…”

“…In such cases Crete's mountain range acts as a perpendicular barrier to the southerly winds and Foehn downslope winds may develop on the lee side of the island causing a significant downward flux. These conditions have significant implications for human health as they produce high near-surface concentrations of dust, raise surface temperatures and reduce relative humidity [25][26][27].…”

“…Windblown dust particles can have a significant climate impact since they can cover great distances from from their sources, directly affecting the planetary radiative balance through their interaction with solar and terrestrial radiation [1] and indirectly influencing cloud formation and cloud optical properties [2]. Dust also affects the prevailing atmospheric conditions and air quality in the transported areas (i.e., the Mediterranean Sea and Europe), thus affecting the health of large populations, especially when synoptic conditions favor its advection within the boundary layer [3][4][5][6].…”
