Human Trabecular Bone Cells Are Able to Express Both Osteoblastic and Adipocytic Phenotype: Implications for Osteopenic Disorders

Abstract: The decrease in bone volume associated with osteoporosis and age-related osteopenia is accompanied by increased marrow adipose tissue formation. Reversal of this process may provide a novel therapeutic approach for osteopenic disorders. We have shown that cells cultured from human trabecular bone are not only osteogenic, but are able also to undergo adipocyte differentiation under defined culture conditions. Osteoblast differentiation was induced by 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D 3 (1,25(OH) 2 D 3 ) and adipocyte dif… Show more

“…23 These receptors are activated by free fatty acids and their oxidation products as well as by some prostaglandins derived from fatty acids that induce the differentiation of preadipocytes into adipocytic cells. [24][25][26][27] AA, which is a precursor for prostaglandins of the -2-family, has specifically been implicated in adipocyte differentiation. 23 With ageing there is a decrease in osteoprogenitor cells with an accompanying increase in adipocytes in bone marrow.…”
