Human tumor cell destruction by distilled water anin Vitroevaluation

Abstract: A distilled water lavage is sometimes used during tumor surgery in an effort to kill tumor cells spilled into a cavity or wound. To test the efficacy of this technique, a model study utilized nine different human tumor cell lines, subjected in vitro to hypotonic exposure for 1 to 10 minutes. Only the carcinoid, multiple myeloma, leiomyosarcoma cell lines, and normal lymphocytes were destroyed by the treatment. Although breast, ovarian, gastric, bladder, and melanoma cell lines were damaged to varying degrees, … Show more

“…Peritoneal dissemination is considered to be caused by free peritoneal cancer cells exfoliated from serosally invasive tumors, and previous studies have reported the cytocidal effects of hypotonic stress on cancer cells [1012]. We previously investigated changes in the cellular morphology and volume of gastric cancer cells subjected to hypotonic shock using several unique methods and apparatus [13].…”

“…Lin et al reported that peritoneal lavage with DW improved the survival rate of patients with spontaneously ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma [10]. Huguet and Keeling described the optimal method for peritoneal lavage with DW during colorectal cancer surgery [11], and Mercill et al found that exposure to distilled water reduced the number of surviving gastric cells [12]. In the present study, we intraperitoneally injected gastric cancer cells preincubated with DW into nude mice and analyzed the development of dissemination nodules in order to determine the efficacy of peritoneal lavage with DW during surgery.…”

“…The finding that murine melanoma , sarcoma , and 2 carcinomas were resistant to hypotonic shock was similar to results of in vitro studies of human malignant cell lines . 10 In vitro malignant mast cell death from hypotonicity occurred within 3 minutes . In our studies prior to the clinical injections , we determined that an intradermal and sc in-" jection of deionized water in the dog resulted in a hypoosmotic environment for at least 3 minutes .…”

“…Mercill et al observed a decrease in DNA synthesis in different tumour cell lines after exposure to distilled water for 1 to 10 min. However, the remaining cells did not lose their replication capacity [17]. In a study of Huguet et al, colorectal cancer cell lines were incubated with distilled water and no surviving cells were found beyond 12 min incubation.…”
