Human Tumors Detected by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Abstract: Measurements of the water proton spinlattice relaxation (T1) in 106 human tumors confirms earlier results with animals [Damadian, R. (1971) Science 171, 1151-11531. T1 of all the tumors studied were significantly longer than T. of the corresponding normal tissues. Mean standard error and range were reported for T, of every human organ and for all the tumor groups studied. The technique is now ready for use by pathologists as an adjunct to present methods of diagnosing malignancy. In an earlier paper (1) concern… Show more

“…This characteristic signal intensity is thought to be due to the paramagnetic effect of stable free radicals in the melanin [3,7], as well as due to the products of acute and chronic hemorrhage. These findings may suggest that the effect of melanin within canine melanoma on the signal intensity is quite similar to that of human melanoma and that this characteristic signal intensity may be used as an indicator to differentiate canine ocular melanoma from other ocular tumors.…”

“…These patients may have lesions of the corneal opacity, edema, or buphthalmus, which may make difficult to evaluate the intraocular structure by slit lump or ophthalmoscopy. Recently, there have been reports in human medicine that melanoma shows characteristic images specific to melanoma on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging when compared to other intraocular tumors [3,7,9,13,20].…”

“…Due to the trehalose having a strong hydration power, specific interaction of the trehalose toward the water molecule on the phospholipid membrane using a model of cell membrane has been reported (5). The movements of water molecules on the cell membrane of cancer cells were more active than normal cells (14). Trehalose liposomes (DMTreC14) inhibited the growth of colon and gastric cancer, hepatic carcinoma and leukemia (8)(9)(10).…”
