Companies are increasingly stressing their need for recruits and employees who can understand the company strategy and operations on a wider scale and with an integrative mindset, as opposed to siloed departments, jobs, and people possessing those jobs. With new digital technologies, new organizational forms such as team-based organizations and virtual teams as well as Human Resource Management practices like job rotations, there are increasing opportunities for cooperation and integration of people with different backgrounds and skillsets, as the interplay between marketing (business function) and R&D (engineering function). However, having the company practices and infrastructure "right" for holistic and cross-disciplinary work does not suffice. The professional preparedness of the practitioners has to support this new paradigm as well. The solution has been proposed to be T-shaped capabilities, where the vertical line represents the deep expertise in one area, and the horizontal line overview expertise to better understand processes outside one´s domain. This is an improvement to I-shaped capabilities, where the connecting horizontal integration is missing. The paper propagates for a prospective upgrade to the T-shaped capability model, the T2 capability profile. The core idea - derived from interviews with industry managers - is that two horizontal lines differ in scope. The societal/business megatrends demand a set of non-contextual understanding of issues such as sustainability, quality as well as basic technical and financial literacy, and the other horizontal line is made of company-and industry-specific processes. To conclude, the opportunities to foster T2-capabilities in (engineering) education get discussed.

“…V-shaped professionals are those who work in parallel disciplines in the present with a shared view of a common future (i.e., akin to the "vanishing point" used in two-dimensional artwork for the purposes of providing the illusion of a third dimension). For example, the integration of "humanitarianism" plus "technologist" to create the emerging profession of "humanitarian technologist" is an example of a prototype profession at the interface of empathy and STEM who uses current technology to create a better future world [16]. Similarly, the integration of nursing with engineering to create the profession of the "nurse+engineer" -who works from the bedside to the community to improve healthcare and promote wellness among individuals, families, communities, and nations -is an example of a V-shaped profession with modern parallel disciplines (i.e., nursing and engineering) sharing a common goal (i.e., affordable healthcare for all) [17].…”

Over the past twenty years, the National Academy of Engineering of the United States of America undertook a campaign entitled, "Changing the Conversation." Explicit intentions of the campaign included raising public awareness of engineering, increasing the total number of engineers, and recruiting historically underrepresented groups to join engineering. In particular, marketing efforts developed inclusive "tag lines" aimed to diversify groups enrolled in engineering and increase the diversity of the professional engineering workforce. While changes in demographics were disappointing for some groups (i.e., little to no change was observed for people of color), generally, the campaign has been considered moderately successful for increasing the number of females joining engineering. This is speculated to be associated with the use of tag lines that helped to "humanize engineering" (i.e., emphasizing the "people helping" aspects of engineering rather than the "building things" aspects of engineering).

Workshop Result: Environmental Engineering Faculty Learning Boyer's Model of Scholarship

As part of the 2021 (delayed until 2022 due to COVID) biennial conference of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP), a preconference workshop on the topic of Ernst Boyer's four-pillar model of academic scholarship in higher education (i.e., discovery, integration, engagement, and the science of teaching and learning) was delivered to 32 workshop participants. The workshop had three objectives, namely: 1) raising awareness to Boyer's model of scholarship in higher education; 2) applying Boyer's model to evaluate participants' own work; and 3) leading institutional change by sharing Boyer's model back home. To achieve these objectives, four activities were undertaken, including: 1) pre-conference review of educational materials introducing Boyer's model (view a video and share on a discussion board); 2) on-site expert testimony clarifying Boyer's model (brief lectures by four speakers); 3) onsite hands-on, small-group work (employing career cartography to achieve Boyer's Model); and 4) post-conference sharing, expert-coaching, and peer-encouragement as workshop participants engaged back home. Assessment of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of workshop participants was undertaken using an on-site, anonymous, voluntary readiness assessment test (RAT) as well as an on-site, anonymous, voluntary comprehension assessment test (CAT0), administered immediately preceding and following the on-site portion of the workshop, respectively. To support the long-term adoption of Boyer's Model, the workshop moderator provided voluntary mentoring/coaching to workshop participants in the months following the completion of the on-site portion of the workshop. The value of this long-term mentoring/coaching was assessed through the collection of additional feedback identifying the Best, Worst, and ways to Improve the workshop. The purpose of this paper is to share: 1) workshop content and format that could be used by other conveners of similar workshops; 2) results of the analysis of the RAT, CAT0, and additional feedback; and 3) the authors' experience with mentoring/coaching workshop participants on Boyer's model of scholarship in higher education, which contribute to suggestions for an educational module that could be used to introduce Boyer's Model and career cartography to graduate students as well as early and mid-career faculty of environmental engineering.
