Cognitive service robots that shall assist persons in need of performing their activities of daily living have recently received much attention in robotics research. Such robots require a vast set of control and perception capabilities to provide useful assistance through mobile manipulation and human-robot interaction. In this article, we present hardware design, perception, and control methods for our cognitive service robot Cosero. We complement autonomous capabilities with handheld teleoperation interfaces on three levels of autonomy. The robot demonstrated various advanced skills, including the use of tools. With our robot, we participated in the annual international RoboCup@Home competitions, winning them three times in a row.

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan robot humanoid untuk permainan sepakbola secara otomatis. Robot humanoid yang dikembangkan tersusun atas 20 sendi yang digerakkan dengan motor servo dynamixel berjenis AX-12 (bagian tubuh atas) dan RX-24 (bagian tubuh bawah), serta dikontrol menggunakan board servo-controller CM-700 (ATMega2561). Robot humanoid memiliki tinggi 44 cm serta dilengkapi dengan sistem keseimbangan menggunakan sensor gyro LPR530 dan akselerometer KXM52-1050. Untuk mengenali objek dan bernavigasi secara otomatis, robot humanoid menggunakan sistem sensor visual berbasiskan kamera CMOS dengan board CMUCAM (LPC2106). Pengujian menunjukkan bahwa robot humanoid pemain bola yang dikembangkan mampu berjalan dengan kecepatan rata-rata 14.37 cm/detik dan memiliki kecepatan maksimal 20 cm/detik. Robot humanoid yang dikembangkan mampu bermain bola secara otomatis: yakni mampu mendeteksi keberadaan bola, mendeteksi lokasi gawang, serta menendang bola ke arah gawang dan mencetak gol. Abstract [Title: The Development of Autonomous Humanoid Soccer Robot]This research aims to develop an autonomous humanoid soccer robot. The humanoid soccer robot is designed using 20 joints which are equipped with dynamixel servo motor and and is controlled by using servo controller board CM-700 (ATMega2561). The humanoid soccer robot is 44 cm in height and is equipped with a balancing system of using gyro sensor LPR530 and accelerometer KXM52-1050. In order to detect object and to navigate autonomously, the humanoid soccer robot is equipped with a CMOS camera which is controlled using CMUCAM board (LPC2016). The experiment shows that the humanoid soccer robot has ability to walk with average speed of 14.37 cm/second and is able to achieve a top speed of up to 20 cm/second. The developed humanoid soccer robot can play soccer autonomously: to locate the ball, to detect the goalpost, and to score the goal to the goalpost.

When Robots Get Bored and Invent Team Sports: A More Suitable Test than the Turing Test?

Increasingly, the Turing test-which is used to show that artificial intelligence has achieved human-level intelligence-is being regarded as an insufficient indicator of human-level intelligence. This essay extends arguments that embodied intelligence is required for human-level intelligence, and proposes a more suitable test for determining human-level intelligence: the invention of team sports by humanoid robots. The test is preferred because team sport activity is easily identified, uniquely human, and is suggested to emerge in basic, controllable conditions. To expect humanoid robots to self-organize, or invent, team sport as a function of human-level artificial intelligence, the following necessary conditions are proposed: humanoid robots must have the capacity to participate in cooperative-competitive interactions, instilled by algorithms for resource acquisition; they must possess or acquire sufficient stores of energetic resources that permit leisure time, thus reducing competition for scarce resources and increasing cooperative tendencies; and they must possess a heterogeneous range of energetic capacities. When present, these factors allow robot collectives to spontaneously invent team sport activities and thereby demonstrate one fundamental indicator of human-level intelligence.
