Humans and Ecosystems Over the Coming Millennia: Overview of a Biosphere Assessment of Radioactive Waste Disposal in Sweden

Abstract: This is an overview of the strategy used to describe the effects of a potential release from a radioactive waste repository on human exposure and future environments. It introduces a special issue of AMBIO, in which 13 articles show ways of understanding and characterizing the future. The study relies mainly on research performed in the context of a recent safety report concerning a repository for spent nuclear fuel in Sweden (the so-called SR-Site project). The development of a good understanding of on-site p… Show more

“…Radionuclide transport and exposure of humans and non-human biota are dependent on climate and landscape development (Kautsky et al, 2013a;. Radionuclide transport is dependent on regolith depths and ecosystem types, and humans and biota can utilise the Forsmark area differently dependingon landscape characteristics, e.g.…”

“…This and other differences between assessing a HLW repository (SR-Site, cf. Kautsky et al, 2013a) and a LILW (SKB, 2014a) are discussed in this article. SFR has been operated by the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co (SKB) since 1988.…”

“…"Adaptive" implies that the governance is characterized by flexibility and learning in response to environmental crisis . However, with the exception of large-scale national projects for which interdisciplinary assessments are crucial (e.g., Kautsky et al 2013), these governance challenges and the potentially synergistic effects of multiple drivers on biodiversity (Brook et al 2008) are rarely analyzed simultaneously. This lack of integrative studies raises the question of how well the scientific community understands the processes underlying change in biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and ecosystem services , and consequently whether future projections can be used to inform decision making (Olsson et al 2010).…”

“…For such a facility, this means that the time frame is up to a million years (Kautsky et al 2013) and may include several periods of glaciation (NĂ€slund et al 2013) and long-term changes such as shore-line displacement and succession of the landscape from marine ecosystems, through lakes and mires, to terrestrial ecosystems (Lindborg et al 2013), as well as changes in expected human behavior (Saetre et al 2013). Usually, such facilities are located or planned close to the coast and will be close to the coast over most of the timeframe of their existence (Kautsky et al 2013; NĂ€slund et al 2013). Thus, the fate of release of radionuclides to the biosphere and particularly the coastal marine ecosystem is of interest.…”
