Humic Substances as a Potent Biomaterials for Therapeutic and Drug Delivery System-a Review

Abstract: Efficiency of therapeutic compounds could be enhanced by encapsulation and covalent attachments to a biomaterial carrier. Complex formation with humic substances is valuable techniques to improve bioactivity of natural products. Fractal structures of humic substances also have adjacent carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. Along with molecular bonding property, reduction-oxidation and association-dissociation capacities of humic substances are considered this as a biomaterial for transform, other molecules, and substa… Show more

“…The presence of phenolic and other redox-active functional groups in HS accounts for their capability of reducing toxic impacts of organic and inorganic oxidizers [ 9 , 10 , 11 ], similar to the redox activity of other natural phenolic compounds [ 12 , 13 ]. The biological activity of HS is intensively discussed now [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ].…”

“…A complex formation with HSs is used in drug delivery systems as a carrier agent to increase the bioactivity of natural products. Complexes with HAs improve the solubility of a given factor, thus increasing its effectiveness (Kala, Prashob and Chandramohanakumar, 2019;Khan, Jain, Aqil, Agarwal, Mirza and Iqbal, 2020). For example, the inclusion of complexes with FA extracted from peat positively influence the solubility of ketoconazole, similar results have been obtained for an FA and aspirin formulation, which helps to overcome the problem of the stability and bioavailability of aspirin.…”

“…The cytotoxic effect of humic acid on adenocarcinoma has also been reported (40). Humic acid induces the release of plasminogen activators and converts plasminogen into plasmin, which degrades insoluble fibrin to soluble fibrinogen degradation product (41).…”
