Humidifier lung and humidifier fever

Abstract: The aim of our study was to evaluate clinical diagnoses in symptomatic persons exposed to aerosols from humidifiers or air conditioners. In addition, we tried to identify the causative antigens. Results of clinical investigations, including inhalation challenge tests, demonstrated a typical hypersensitivity pneumonitis (humidifier lung) in 9 persons and isolated systemic symptoms without significant changes in lung function and chest x-rays (humidifier fever) in 3 persons. Microbiological studies revealed a va… Show more

“…In some previous studies, humidifiers have been associated with inhalation lung injury, for example, hypersensitivity pneumonitis 9,10 . And some cases were reported about humidifier-associated diseases like extrinsic allergic alveolitis and toxic aveolitis 11,12 . However, it is not clear that humidifier have been associated with AFOP in this case.…”

“…A. pullulans also causes hypersensitive pneumonitis such as ‘sauna taker’s lung’ [36]. It has been isolated from air conditioning units coincident with antibodies to this organism being found in the blood of patients in Colorado [37], New York [38] and Germany [39]. Although we recognized an increased incidence of asthma evaluations and admissions during times of increased Aureobasidium , identified individuals with skin test reactivity to extracts of A. pullulans , and detected high molecular weight allergens in Aureobasidium extracts using patient sera IgE, direct provocation testing has yet to be accomplished.…”
