Humidity and sleep: a review on thermal aspect

Abstract: The peripheral humidity detector/detection is not clear though there are comprehensive reports of subjective perception. High relative humidity at ambient temperatures above thermo-neutral zone has deleterious effect on sleep. Humidity affects heat transfer rate by affecting evaporation and thereby disturbing the Tc and Ts dynamics. The effect is discernible across a host of sleep, body temperature, and microclimate indices. A number of hypotheses have been proposed to explain the sleep structure regulation of… Show more

“…Sleep is intricately related to the function of various physiological systems[ 26 ] and fluctuations in the physical microenvironment. [ 27 ] The health-care systems of the developing societies, which are already under pressure from enormous levels of infectious diseases, may be better placed to strategize prevention and awareness programs to decrease unwarranted sleep problems from polysubstance use. Such programs seem more indispensable because of the lack of awareness about sleep health issues even among the educated population in the developing societies.…”

“…Additionally, prior research relating RH to health outcome metrics has considered just one outcome factor belying the complex nature of any potential relationship. [19][20][21] we found an indirect effect of objectively measured poorer sleep quality, mediated by stress responses, for those outside this range.…”

“…However, while Derby et al reiterated many of Sterling's findings, they caution against mandating a general, lower limit without additional research involving a larger number of subjects, a more diverse study population, and conducted in real‐world settings. Additionally, prior research relating RH to health outcome metrics has considered just one outcome factor belying the complex nature of any potential relationship …”

“…This result is striking, given that there is commonality between the rhythm pattern of C-3, C-4, and REM sleep regulation. REM sleep has a predominant circadian regulation [32] , and the serum levels of both C-3 and C-4 have well-characterized circadian patterns [14] , which gives further insight into the possible physiological basis of our experimental hypothesis, i.e., the similarity between the association pattern of sleep and inflammatory cytokines and the association pattern of sleep and inflammatory complement components. The circadian aspect of sleep maintains stable and healthy cytokine rhythms [33] and may play a role in the maintenance of stable and healthy complement component rhythms.…”
