Digitalni simulator RTDS (angl. Real Time Digital Simulator) podjetja RTDS Technologies je eden od simulatorjev, ki omogočajo izračun elektromagnetnih pojavov v realnem času, pri čemer dosega izjemno nizke korake digitalne integracije (večinoma 50 μs, za nekatere elemente močnostne elektronike, kot so na primer tiristorski pretvorniki, tudi do 1.5 μs). Posebna strojna oprema omogoča uvoz in izvoz signalov do zunanje opreme, s čimer omogoča preizkušanje dejanskih naprav v zaprti zanki z računalniškim modelom EES. Tako ima uporabnik na voljo analizo delovanja naprave same in tudi analizo vpliva delovanja te naprave na razmere v preostalem sistemu. Testirana naprava pravzaprav "ne ve" ali je priklopljena na simulacijski model ali v resničen EES. Napravo so prvotno razvili za testiranje krmilnih modulov konverterskih postaj visokonapetostnih enosmernih prenosov. Uporaba ustrezne metode modeliranja homogenih vodov in ekstremno hitra komunikacija omogočata uporabo tehnik vzporednega procesiranja signalov, s katerim lahko pojave z ustrezno opremo izračunamo hitreje, kot bi se zgodili. Glavna težava pri razvoju takšne opreme je v doseganju dovolj velike hitrosti izračunov ob dovolj majhnem integracijskem koraku ΔT, saj manjši ΔT omogoča natančnejši izračun in zajemanje višjefrekvenčnih pojavov, po drugi strani pa zajetno povečuje potrebno število matematičnih operacij in posledično čas izračuna.

Converter control model plays an essential function for HVDC system dynamic simulation in real time simulator (RTDS). RTDS can provide approach for detailed studies of options and predictions of the system performance. This paper first presents the basic principle of the power control, firing control and transformer tap control. Then the paper presents our modeling effort for these control models. The configuration of control models includes major sections of practical controls. The paper also makes final verification test of these sections with a typical power system model. The validity of proposal methods and designed simulation model is verified by tests and computed results. The built HVDC control model is competent for the RTDS simulation.
