Hyaluronic acid application vs arthroscopy in treatment of internal temporomandibular joint disorders

Abstract: AIMS: The goal of this study was to compare the treatment outcome after two different treatment modalities in cases of disc displacement of the temporomandibular joint diagnosed via magnetic resonance technique, namely surgical procedure in form of arthroscopic lysis and lavage vs. hyaluronic acid superior joint space application. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging was performed before and one year after treatment. Simultaneously, pre-and post-treatment visual analogue scales and maximal mouth o… Show more

“…There is a steady upward trend in the number of primary studies on HA published in subsequent years. The primacy of HA from 2021 seems to be threatened by centrifuged blood products, but this group of substances is heterogeneous and cannot be compared to HA in terms of effectiveness as a whole [18,19,22,25,38,43,49,51,54,[58][59][60]63,68,70,71,74,75,78,80,80,82,86,88,89,[91][92][93]95,[98][99][100][101][102]105,106,110,[113][114][115][116][117]120,121,124,126,127,129,130,…”

“…Compared to men, women exhibit a three-fold higher susceptibility to developing temporomandibular joint disorders such as TMJ disc displacement (malposition of the disc in relation to the mandibular condyle and articular eminence (5)) and arthralgia (6,7,8). This level of prevalence can stem from specific characteristics unique to the female population, including greater intraarticular pressure and joint laxity, smaller joint space and higher levels of TMJ pain, potentially influenced by estrogen (9).…”
