Hybrid direct manufacturing method of metallic parts using deposition and micro continuous rolling

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to report a new direct metal manufacturing method which integrates freeform deposition process and micro rolling process, introduce the manufacturing principle and show the advantages of this method. Design/methodology/approach -This paper introduces the hybrid manufacturing principle and devices first. Then, the key parameters of hybrid manufacturing process are studied by contrast experiments. The results of comparisons of manufacturing accuracy, microstructure and tensi… Show more

“…As a result, the errors do not decrease significantly while the parts were scaled up 1.2 times. An exact reason cannot be provided, however for small and medium parts where the volume does not exceed 100 cm 3 , even though the number of repositioning and filament retraction times are kept unchanged, the length of the repositioning tool path is significantly shorter than that of the larger volume parts, while the intermittent factors are identical. This may lead to an increase in estimation error.…”

“…Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that errors can be simply reduced to lower than 1% by expanding It was found that the majority of the estimation inaccuracy lies in producing parts with a volume of less than 50 cm 3 . Therefore, the volumes of test parts G and H were specifically designed to be less than 50 cm 3 . Subsequently the three original test parts were scaled up 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 times, generating 12 test parts with differing part volumes and heights.…”

“…"AM as a process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing methodologies" [2]. Compared with traditional machining operations and other manufacturing technologies, additive manufacturing technology can quickly and accurately manufacture complex parts with high forming efficiency, which can save design and manufacturing costs, to a certain extent [3][4][5]. The heat sources used in additive metal manufacturing include lasers, electron beams, arcs, etc.…”
