Hybrid polygon and hydrodynamic nebula modeling with multi-waveband radiation transfer in astrophysics

Abstract: We demonstrate the potential for research and outreach of mixed polygon and hydrodynamic modeling and multi-waveband rendering in the interactive 3-D astrophysical virtual laboratory Shape. In 3-D special effects and animation software for the mass media, computer graphics techniques that mix polygon and numerical hydrodynamics have become common place. In astrophysics, however, interactive modeling with polygon structures has only become available with the software Shape. Numerical hydrodynamic simulations an… Show more

“…Each slit position indeed produces a position-velocity (PV) diagram that reveals the expansion of the nova remnants along the long-slit. This information will be used in conjunction with the direct images to investigate the 3D physical structure of the nova remnant using the morphokinematic modelling tool SHAPE 4 (version 5.0; Steffen & Koning 2017 ). This software allows constructing 3D model structures and producing synthetic images and PV maps under the assumption of homologous expansion that can be compared with the observed ones.…”

“…Offset ( plane of the sky and counted positive from north towards the observer.) In an effort to test this interpretation, we constructed a 3dimensional model of the structure in Shape (Steffen et al 2010(Steffen et al , 2011Steffen & Koning 2017), including basic radiative transfer of CO utilizing the shapemol module (Santander-García et al 2015). The model was optimized by referring to the total intensity and channel maps, PV diagrams, and spectral profiles of the CO 3-2 emission.…”
