Hybrid Process Chain for the Integration of Direct Ink Writing and Polymer Injection Molding

Abstract: The integration of additive manufacturing direct-writing technologies with injection molding provides a novel method to combine functional features into plastic products, and could enable mass-manufacturing of custom-molded plastic parts. In this work, direct-write technology is used to deposit conductive ink traces on the surface of an injection mold. After curing on the mold surface, the printed trace is transferred into the plastic part by exploiting the high temperature and pressure of a thermoplastic poly… Show more

“…The alternative coolants such as cool air [ 63 ] or oil [ 64 ] can also be used in the experiment for investigating the difference in the cooling performance of an injection mold with optimum CCCs. Lastly, the molds or dies with CCCs fabricated by the proposed method can also be employed in metal injection molding [ 65 ], rotational molding [ 66 ], centrifugal molding, thermoforming [ 67 ], transfer molding [ 68 ], hot stamping [ 69 ], plastic injection molding [ 70 , 71 ], microinjection molding [ 72 , 73 ], or blow molding [ 74 ]. These issues are currently being investigated and the results will be presented in a later study.…”

“…However, IME current state still requires a long way to be optimized and developed to meet commercial needs, since problems such as limited durability, stability, and reliability have been identified in some of the current research work. 3D in-molded electronics are quickly emerging and gaining popularity [89,90]. Furthermore, the presence of IME insert film-based technology did not exclude the use of laser structured MID technology, and depending on the desired product output, the consumer may always choose between the processes to create a structural printed plastic shape.…”

“…Although embedding the copper wire led to superior electrical conductivity, the geometrical design freedom was highly restricted and additional welding or soldering was required for interconnections and contacting components. Similarly, there are some other reported examples of combinations of technologies such as injection molding of polymer and direct writing of conductive inks, [ 17 ] inkjet printing (polyJet) of dielectrics, and dispensing of conductive ink, [ 18 ] where the printed electrical circuits are either on the surface or embedded via additional assembly steps.…”
