Hybrid RSS/AOA Localization using Approximated Weighted Least Square in Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: We present a target localization method using an approximated error covariance matrix based weighted least squares (WLS) solution, which integrates received signal strength (RSS) and angle of arrival (AOA) data for wireless sensor networks. We approximated linear WLS errors via second-order Taylor approximation, and further approximated the error covariance matrix using a least-squares solution and the variance in measurement noise over the sensor nodes. The algorithm does not require any prior knowledge of th… Show more

“…Therefore, great efforts have been devoted to improve their accuracy by applying a weighting matrix to the LS solution, so called weighted LS (WLS). In [9,[16][17][18], a weighting covariance matrix is derived based on noise statistics. However, since noise statistics are not available, they need to be estimated first.…”

“…In other applications such as localization and tracking of first responders, RSSI and AOA information is collected by the anchors and processed at a data fusion center. In this case, target positioning using hybrid AOA/RSSI data can be cast as a nonconvex optimization problem [ 9 ]. Solutions of this problem can be categorized into optimization-based and least square (LS) estimators [ 10 ].…”

“…However, as WSNs were originally not used for location-awareness services, the challenge lies in dealing with the measurement errors in RSS and AOA measurements. To improve the accuracy of target position estimation, hybrid localization algorithms combining both RSS and AOA measurements have been recently investigated in [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ].…”
