Hybrids formed between polyvinylpyrrolidone and an A3B porphyrin dye: behaviour in aqueous solutions and chemical response to CO2 presence

Abstract: This study reports the incorporation of an A 3 B mixed functionalized porphyrin, namely 5-(4-pyridyl)-10,15,20-tris(4-phenoxyphenyl)porphyrin (PyTPOPP), into polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a biocompatible polymer, with the purpose of preparing water-soluble polymer-dye (PVP-PyTPOPP) hybrids. The hybrids were obtained in two variants, differing by molar ratios, and their molecular characteristics and aggregation in dilute aqueous solutions were investigated using static and dynamic light scattering and analytical … Show more

“…This formulation has been extensively studied with respect to its biodistribution and pharmacokinetics, [56,57] intracellular localization [58], interactions with lipoproteins [59], and possible cell death mechanisms [54,55]. Due to its potentiality, PVP has been used with success to prepare formulations of other PSs like phthalocyanines and porphyrins [60,61].…”

“…The incorporation of TZ-POR derivatives 7a-f into PVP was performed according to the literature (Scheme 4) [60,61]. Both components were dissolved in chloroform [ratio PVP (10): 7a-f (1) w/w] and were maintained under stirring for 2 h at room temperature.…”

“…The interaction between CO 2 and this type of polymerdye hybrids was studied by UV-vis spectroscopy and the continuous hypochromic response of the Soret band in direct relationship with increased CO 2 concentration was noticed. The authors [25] stated that based on the UV-vis spectral differences between the hybrids in acidic medium and during CO 2 exposure the mechanism of CO 2 detection was not based on pH changes. TEM and AFM analysis gave chances to presuming a mechanism based on chemisorption phenomena which modify the surface properties.…”

“…During the last four decades analytical chemistry used porphyrins and metalloporphyrins that are incorporated into several polymeric films or membranes, such as: PVC [20], polysiloxanes [21], Nafion [22], polymethacrylates [23], polypyrrole [24] or chemically bonded to the polymer chain, such as PVP [25] for the detection or monitoring the presence of different analytes from gases to toxic heavy metals.…”

“…Encouraged by our previous results in H 2 O 2 and CO 2 detection using porphyrins in combination with various inorganic/polymeric matrices [17,18], the next step of this research was to create a new sensitive material, that can optically or electrochemically detect minute quantities of H 2 O 2 (in the range of 5-35 µM, representing relevant levels in human physiology) and which might easily be incorporated in a detection device. Gold nanoparticles smaller than 20 nm in which total extinction is nearly all contributed by absorption [19] have been functionalized with Co(II) 5,10,15,20-meso-tetra(3-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin ( Fig.…”
