Hydatid Cyst of the Heart

Abstract: Cystic hydatid disease is responsible for the loss of 1 to 3 million disability-adjusted life years every year. Infestation of the heart, though rare, can result in serious complications if left untreated. We retrospectively collected information on 19 patients with cardiac hydatid cyst admitted at the Center for Cardiac Surgery of Ibn Al-Bitar Hospital in Baghdad from July 2007 to July 2011 who were either in need of a cardiac surgery for treating hydatid cysts or presented with emergency conditions. Nine (47… Show more

“…Heart echinococcosis usually is asymptomatic and may present with nonspecific symptoms. However in later stages, in the case of cyst rupture into the heart, different symptoms appear depending upon the location of the cyst (Madariaga et al 1984;Noaman et al 2017;Ü nlü et al 2002). In the present report, patients with heart hydatid cyst were asymptomatic and symptoms such as dyspnea and chest pain that were seen in one patient could be explained by lung cyst.…”

“…Our patient was also asymptomatic. However it can cause many complications including left ventricular outlet flow obstruction, acute coronary syndrome, cardiac arrhythmias, pericardial effusion and pericarditis (7,8). Given the different anatomical and pathological development, we consider that additional cardiac pathologies such as coronary artery disease and valvular pathologies were not related the hydatit cyst.…”
