Hydraulic and Water quality Analysis for Puzhal Water Treatment Plant, Tamil Nadu, India

Abstract

Access to clean water is becoming a more challenging problem for people due to urbanization. The contaminations caused through dumping of industrial waste in the existing Water Distribution System (WDS), impose challenges on water quality. Further, the degradation of the hydraulics involved in the WDS also adds to the contamination. Addressing above issues becomes essential, as it may leads to severe health hazard. Continuous monitoring of hydraulics and water quality can be the promising solution to alleviate these issues. In this research, to enable continuous monitoring, the WDS is modeled using EPANET 2.0 software. The case study considered in this research is Puzhal water treatment plant of Chennai. The hydraulic factors modeled are head, pressure, and demand while Chlorine (Cl) level is modeled for water quality. From the proposed work, it is inferred that the Cl level of the Puzhal WTP is maintained within the permissible limit and identified the quantity of water demand for this entire WDS.
