In Austria, a cooperative research project including partners of five utilities and three research institutes is in progress dealing with strategic sewer rehabilitation planning. One of the objectives of the research is to define measurable performance indicators (PIs) related to service levels, which can be used at a national, but also at an international scale in accordance with technical standards. Several predefined performance indicators for surcharge, flooding and combined sewer overflow are analyzed using 8 real world and 250 virtual case studies. Among other findings, it is demonstrated that only all-pipe models can be used for a system comparison. This work attempts to generalize PIs, which can be used for different applications, in our case, for prioritizing rehabilitation.
