Burial history, thermal maturity, and timing of hydrocarbon generation were modelled for the Jurassic source rocks in the basement of the Carpathian Foredeep and marginal part of the Outer Carpathians. The area of investigation was bounded to the west by Kraków, to the east by Rzeszów. The modelling was carried out in profiles of wells: Będzienica 2, Dębica 10K, Góra Ropczycka 1K, Goleszów 5, Nawsie 1, Pławowice E1 and Pilzno 40. The organic matter, containing gas-prone Type III kerogen with an admixture of Type II kerogen, is immature or at most, early mature to 0.7 % in the vitrinite reflectance scale. The highest thermal maturity is recorded in the south-eastern part of the study area, where the Jurassic strata are buried deeper. The thermal modelling showed that the obtained organic matter maturity in the initial phase of the "oil window" is connected with the stage of the Carpathian overthrusting. The numerical modelling indicated that the onset of hydrocarbon generation from the Middle Jurassic source rocks was also connected with the Carpathian thrust belt. The peak of hydrocarbon generation took place in the orogenic stage of the overthrusting. The amount of generated hydrocarbons is generally small, which is a consequence of the low maturity and low transformation degree of kerogen. The generated hydrocarbons were not expelled from their source rock. An analysis of maturity distribution and transformation degree of the Jurassic organic matter shows that the best conditions for hydrocarbon generation occurred most probably in areas deeply buried under the Outer Carpathians. It is most probable that the "generation kitchen" should be searched for there.

Abstract:The geochemical characteristics of the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic strata of the basement of the Carpathian Foredeep depicted the Devonian and Carboniferous source rocks as the best source for hydrocarbon generation. Moreover, the Outer Carpathian sequence was geochemically characterized and proved capable of generating hydrocarbons. The oil-source rocks' correlations indicated that the source of the condensate accumulated in the Łąkta field, while oil in the Grobla field. Maturity modelling identified Devonian source rocks as they reached a late phase of the "oil window" and, locally, even the "gas window". The Carboniferous source rock was mature enough to start the generation processes. The generation started in the late Carboniferous, both in the Upper Silesian and Małopolska blocks. The main phase of the petroleum processes took place in late Neogene. The expulsion was observed only in the Devonian source rocks, and vertical migration by fault system in both blocks resulted in oil and gas accumulation in the Upper Jurassic carbonates and Upper Cretaceous sandstones. The petroleum modelling indicated the Devonian source for oil and gas fields in the study area. However oil-source rock correlation also suggests the presence of the Carpathian flysch source for hydrocarbons accumulated in the Łąkta field.

Building and exhumation of the Western Carpathians: New constraints from sequentially restored, balanced cross sections integrated with low‐temperature thermochronometry

Western Carpathian orogeny has been the subject of intense scientific debate due to the occurrence of enigmatic features, leading several authors to provide contrasting geological models. In this paper, a new interpretation for the tectonic evolution of the Western Carpathians is provided based on the following: (i) an analysis of the stratigraphy of the Mesozoic‐Tertiary successions across the thrust belt domains, (ii) a reappraisal of the stratigraphy and sedimentology of the “tectonic mélange” (i.e., the so‐called Pieniny Klippen Belt) marking the suture between the Inner and Outer Carpathians, and (iii) the construction of a series of balanced and restored cross sections, validated by 2‐D forward modeling. Our analysis provides a robust correlation of the stratigraphy from the Outer to the Inner Carpathians, independently of the occurrence of oceanic lithosphere in the area, and allows for the reinterpretation of the tectonic relationships among the Inner Carpathians, the Outer Carpathians, and the Pieniny Klippen Belt and the exhumation mechanisms affecting this orogenic belt. In order to constrain the evolution during the last 20 Ma, our model also integrates previously published and new apatite fission track and apatite (U‐Th‐Sm)/He data. These latter indicate a middle‐late Miocene exhumation of the Pieniny Klippen Belt. In this study, the recent regional uplift of the Pieniny Klippen Belt is described for the first time using a 2‐D kinematic model for the tectonic evolution of the Western Carpathians.
